Determining current specifications: ESCs have two rated values for continuous current and instantaneous current. Continuous current is the maximum continuous current that the ESC can safely handle, while instantaneous current is the maximum current that the ESC can withstand for a short period of time (typically less than 10 seconds). When selecting an ESC, it should be determined based on the motor and propeller combination. Larger motors and propellers with larger pitch require ESCs with higher current ratings. For example, when using a 5-inch high-pitch propeller with a 2207kv or 2450kv motor, the current may rise to 40 amperes. It is recommended to choose an ESC with a continuous current rating of 40A or higher, and ensure that the instantaneous current rating can meet the motor's peak current requirements to prevent the ESC from being damaged due to overload.
Voltage compatibility range: Different ESCs support different input voltages, with common types including 4S and 6S lithium batteries. Ensure the ESC's voltage rating is compatible with the lithium battery's voltage. If the ESC's supported voltage is lower than the battery's voltage, it may burn out the ESC or damage the motor. Most ESCs specify the rated battery voltage (S) they can handle, so select based on the battery's specifications.
Consider functional features: Some ESCs have built-in BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit), which can output 5V voltage to power the flight controller, receiver, etc. ESCs without BEC are lighter, smaller, and quieter, but the flight controller and receiver require separate power supplies. If you want to simplify the power supply system, choose an ESC with BEC; if you prioritize extreme lightweight design or have an independent power supply solution, an ESC without BEC is more suitable.
Pay attention to size and weight: FPV aircraft are sensitive to weight and size, especially for drones like the穿越机. If the aircraft has limited space or strict weight requirements, choose a smaller, lighter ESC, such as some four-in-one ESCs with high integration, which can save space and weight, but heat dissipation performance may need further consideration; if space and weight constraints are less stringent, you can choose individual ESCs, which may offer more flexibility in heat dissipation and installation.
Consider brand and quality: Well-known brands of ESCs typically offer better quality and performance, such as Feiying Jiale and Haoying. Their products perform well in terms of stability, compatibility, and durability, and they also provide comprehensive after-sales service. You can research user reviews and actual usage experiences of different brands through online reviews and forum discussions to select products with a good reputation.
Consider budget constraints: ESC prices vary significantly, with entry-level models costing around $10 and high-end models costing several hundred dollars or more. For beginners or those with lower performance requirements, entry-level products at lower price points can be chosen to familiarize oneself with operation; for professional racing or applications with higher performance demands, mid-to-high-end ESCs within budget constraints can be selected to achieve better performance and stability.
